FAQs

What is Kiwanis?
Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers that are dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time. Kiwanis Clubs, located in 80 nations, help their communities in countless ways. Each community’s needs are different — so each Kiwanis Club is different. By working together, members achieve what one person cannot accomplish alone. When you give a child the chance to learn, experience, dream, grow, succeed, and thrive, great things happen.

Service is at the heart of every Kiwanis Club, no matter where in the world it’s located. Members stage nearly 150,000 service projects and raise nearly US$107 million every year for communities, families, and projects.

How is this young professionals Kiwanis Club a bit different?
Members of young professional Kiwanis Clubs are young people starting out in different fields that want to make a difference in the world. Young Professional Kiwanians perform community service that meets the needs of children and their communities; network with other young professionals throughout the DC metro area and country; form friendships with others through happy hours and other social events; travel and meet other Kiwanians; and, most importantly, have fun!

What does the name "Kiwanis" mean?
The name "Kiwanis" was coined from an expression in an American Indian language of the Detroit area, Nunc Kee-wanis, which means, "we trade" or "we have a good time." DCYP prefers the good time definition.

What is the official mascot of the DCYP Kiwanis club?
Why, it's the KIWI, of course! Yes, this small, flightless bird is the official mascot of DCYP.

How many Kiwanis clubs/members are there?
There are more than 8,400 Kiwanis clubs with nearly 280,000 members in 96 nations and geographic areas.  If you join, there can be nearly 280,001 members. How long has DCYP Kiwanis been around? We officially chartered on Tuesday, November 15, 2005. Legend has it that one founding member declared "now we must all hang out together, or surely we will hang out separately. "

How do I join DCYP Kiwanis?
Coming to this page is a good start. You can also to check the Join Us section, e-mail us at dcyp.membership@gmail.com or come to any of our projects, events, or meetings.

If I join, what is required of me?
Practically nothing! Every new member does have to pay membership dues; however, this is the only set-in-stone requirement. After that, you can come to whatever you want: our monthly meeting, service projects, social events, etc. Our philosophy is: if we have great events, you will come.

Do I have to be a member to show up and participate in an event?
While we would love for you to be a member of DCYP, our events are open to anyone. We encourage you to come to see what we are all about.
